Roll into new friendships with Sacramento Roller Derby's Spring Fling event:

Roller derby as a sport has been around since 1935. It gained popularity in the 1950s and 60s as a full-contact sport for women. It's seeing another renaissance through teams like Sacramento Roller Derby.

"It's like playing rugby on skates. You skate around and you hit your friends and it's fun," says Felicia "Crutch" Crutcher.

Anyone can try.

Beginners start in Derby 101. In six weeks, you'll learn how to skate and you'll learn how to fall without hurting yourself. Then, you're eligible to play in scrimmages.

It's one of the few sports created for women first.

"It's a space where the ladies are the standard in the sport and men are secondary. It's roller derby and then men's roller derby," says "Crutch."
